Coaches

During Dig, high school students benefit from the mentorship of our Coaches. Dig Coaches are current students at Calvin Seminary who supervise and mentor Dig participants throughout the program. Here are the Coaches from the 2017 program:

Christina Van Eck

Meet Christina, one of this summer’s fun-loving Dig coaches! For Christina, southern California is home. She is the oldest of three siblings, and comes from a tight-knit, goofy family. Some of Christina’s favorite activities include ultimate frisbee, hiking, all kinds of sports, writing, playing the piano, eating ice cream, and watching hilarious YouTube videos. Christina will graduate with the Calvin College Class of 2017 this May and is eager to see where God leads her next. She hopes to further pursue a career where her degrees in writing and ministry leadership can be utilized. As someone with a passion for youth and having loads of fun, Christina is super excited for the Dig program! She cannot wait to spend time with the Dig students and help them understand the deep love God has for each one of them and the world.

Derek Ellens

Meet Derek, one of our awesome Dig coaches this summer! A native of Hamilton, Ontario, Derek is the oldest of two boys. This past summer, Derek’s family grew when Derek married his wife, Jillian. In his free time, Derek engages in many different activities such as eating sushi, playing the ukelele, wakeboarding, thrift shopping and spending time with family and friends. As a Calvin Seminary student, Derek is currently working toward his Master’s of Divinity degree. He hopes to be a pastor within the next few years which flows out of his heart for people—especially those with disabilities. Because Derek enjoys forming meaningful relationships with those around him, he is eager to begin this summer’s Dig program. He cannot wait to meet the Dig students and kick-off an incredible three weeks together!

Heather Haveman

Meet Heather, one of our fabulous Dig coaches this summer! After living in places like South Carolina, Washington D.C., and China, Heather now lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Heather is very close to her family partly because she and her older sister married a pair of brothers. In her free time, Heather enjoys coloring and canning fresh produce. One of the places that Heather holds most dear to her heart is East Asia. After living there for some time in her twenties, Heather developed a love for and an interest in the people, culture, and foreign relations of East Asia. She loves to see God and his people in other cultures. Presently, Heather is in the thick of Calvin Seminary’s Master’s of Divinity program where she enjoys being challenged to think deeply about theology. Heather also loves to connect with others through deep conversations. Because of this, Heather is excited to further engage this summer’s high school students as she dives into her role as a “Coach” in the Dig program.

Jon Bosma

Meet Jon, one of our stellar coaches for this summer’s Dig program! Jon grew up in Zeeland, Michigan as the third of four children in his family. Whether hanging out with friends, eating waffles, watching the Chicago Cubs, or playing ultimate frisbee, Jon seizes every chance to be active and have a good time. Currently, Jon is a Calvin Seminary student working toward his Master’s of Divinity degree. Throughout his life, Jon felt God’s call upon his life to pursue ministry work. Eventually, Jon hopes to become a pastor somewhere in the United States because he loves walking alongside of individuals in their faith stories. Because of this, Jon is especially excited for the opportunity to work with this summer’s awesome group of Dig students!

Zack DeBruyne

Meet Zack, one of our fantastic Dig coaches! Zack grew up in St. Catherines, Ontario with two loving, Christian parents and three brothers. To this day, Zack’s family is very close, and he continues to grow and learn from them. In his free time, Zack loves to engage in many different activities: playing board games, wrestling (with his brothers), playing FIFA 17, grinding coffee, and especially hanging out with his wife. Zack is currently attending Calvin Theological Seminary in pursuit of his Masters of Divinity degree with a focus on Church Planting and Entrepreneurial Ministry. One of Zack’s greatest joys is working with youth. He loves forming meaningful relationships with young people and helping them recognize their full identity in Christ. Zack’s heart for youth makes him all the more eager to begin Dig and meet each one of this summer’s
awesome students!

Kyle Bradshaw

Meet Kyle, one this summer’s wonderful Dig coaches! Kyle is the oldest of three siblings, and he loves spending time with his caring, goofy family. A native of Olympia, Washington, Kyle loves hiking, backpacking, and being outdoors. He also loves playing sports, reading good books, gardening, and cooking creative and delicious meals. Kyle recently graduated from Calvin College with a degrees geography and ministry leadership. In the future, Kyle hopes to pursue further schooling in a seminary or master’s program where he can explore the importance of “place” in congregational life. Kyle cannot wait to start the Dig program. He is excited to get to know each high schooler and walk with the students as they wrestle with tough questions.
